DSLExtreme Poor Reliability Problem -- How to fix it!

In a previous review of DSLExtreme, I tracked the poor reliability of DSLExtreme as my internet service provider. After digging into the problem and talking with others, I've finally found the way to fix it!!
  • Problem: DSLExtreme internet service does down about once per day! And it can stay down for a hour or longer!! Calls to tech support can be an hour long wait and then they hang up on you!
  • Reason: the dslextreme dns server (both the primary and the secondary) go down (Note: you don't have to understand what this means to fix the problem)
  • Easiest fix: add addtional dns servers. Here's how:
    • On your Window PC : Click on Start button, control panel, network connections
    • On a "connected" network connection, right mouse click, choose properties
    • In the checkbox area , highlight the TCP/IP selection and click properties
    • The screen that appears probably says dns server addresses are obtained automatically. Change that to "use the following dns addresses". But that screen only allows you to add 2 addresses. The dslextreme downtime is caused when both servers fail. So, add more dns servers as follows:
    • Click advanced button
    • choose dns tab
    • add the following dns ip addresses (I got these from the dslextreme support pages):
      • 66.51.205.100
      • 66.51.206.100
      • 66.218.44.5
      • 66.218.44.90
    • Click all the OK buttons to get out. This will make dslextreme stable for you!!
      • If these instructions have helped you, feel free to click on an advertisement at the top, bottom, or side of this web page -- thanks! (Your ads click might get you to switch internet providers ... hee hee)
      • This web page has some screen shots to help out the instructions above -- you can follow the screen shots up to step 4
  • Alternative
    fix
: run your own dns server. I used treewalk for windows and it worked well for a month. It might go down every week or two, but then you just restart it.

Actually, you can use any DNS server out there as long as you know its IP Address.

Anyone would like to contribute DNS name IPs that we can use FREELY?

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Try a speedtest there.

DSLExtreme connection drops for me whenever I try to use their speed test. Bizzare!

Tried the fix at my parents place.. still drops the connection when I try to do the speed test. Sorry, that didn't work for me for some reason.

If DSL is your only option, get the month-to-month plan to see if their completely incompetent tech support people can even get you connected! I tried to get their service and was told, one day after my activation date, that I should wait an additional day or two and power cycle the modem to check the connection as I was unable to connect that day and 1 day after the activation date. When I asked the "cancellation" customer support rep, she said she had no idea why tech support would ask that I wait a day or longer to re-try the connection and that If I did want to cancel the contract, I would have to pay $250. I stated "since I used maybe 30 min of your off-shore tech support time and was never able to get a connection therefore ZERO data usage was used and I requested a cancellation order three days after the activation date to which I was still not connected, why should I have to pay." She just stated the rules of the early termination fee. Complete BS. I asked what are the exceptions to waiving a early termination fee. She said that if all efforts to establish a connection were unsuccessful due to the telephone connection, the fee would be waived. So either way, I tried to cancel three days into my contract based on no connectivity. They would not let me out of the contract. DO NOT USE DSL EXTREME if you can get get a comparable plan from your telephone provider.
